Abstract

Introduction: Although workplace violence affects virtually all sectors and categories of workers, those working in healthcare and social care organizations are the most affected worldwide. The objective of this study was to identify the incidence of violence in the practice of medicine in four participating countries (Spain, Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay) during the year 2024, as well as to identify possible contributing factors. Methods: The sample was non-probabilistic, using a self-administered and anonymous survey. Results: A total of 1,920 physicians participated, and 53% experienced violence during the past year. There were almost 10% more young women with episodes of violence. Verbal violence accounted for 68% of cases and physical violence totaled 7%. Some statistically significant associations were identified between physicians' perceptions of general aspects of the profession and the incidence of acts of violence. Only 7% of them initiated legal action after the episode. Importantly, 37% modified their usual way of relating to patients (such as reducing contact). Discussion: The study provided updated information on this issue in four spanish-speaking countries, revealing similarities and differences. Violence and harassment against physicians in the workplace not only affects the victims but also the organization itself.
